Funny illustration…..ha ha or peculiar?

There is an old phrase about whether ‘funny’ is ‘ha ha’ or ‘peculiar’.

‘Funny ha ha’ seems to cover anything amusing or comical whereas ‘Funny peculiar’ seems to cover anything slightly strange. They can both make us laugh but for totally different reasons.

So if an illustrator has a ‘Funny’ style does that mean that if it’s a cartoony style it should be used for ‘funny ha ha’, and if it’s a quirky style then it should be used for ‘funny peculiar’? No, humour is personal but using it in a book, especially a children’s book it should be used to entertain and speed smooth the storyline. So what it comes down to is what style does that best.

Take a look at all the illustrators from Allied Artists who have humorous styles, Dee Smith, Jack Stubbs, Gem Moss, Sveta Sadykova, Del Thorpe, Mirko Filippi, AtOlOnia, Jim Taylor, Jeff Dehut and Charlotte Cleveland. ‘Funny ha ha’ or ‘Funny peculiar’? It’s your choice!!
